Several different types of communications are available over the Internet. This class will examine and use at least three types during the semester.
All ECI 304 students will use e-mail throughout this class. Every student at ODU has an ODU e-mail account. This is a web-based e-mail account which allows access from any internet accessable machine. Those students wishing to use an off campus email address must set their ODU account to forward messages. All course email will be sent to the ODU address.
A listserv distributes email messages to a list of subscribed members. This allows a member to send one message to every person on the listserv. is a program designed to accumulate e-mail addresses in a list, then when any member of the list sends an e-mail to the list address, it is disbursed to everyone on the list. The directions for joining the ECI 304 listserv will be posted during the 2nd week of class.
Each week Dr. Hollenbeck will send a question to the listserv. Students are expected to thoughtfully respond to at least three weekly questions over the course of the semester. To get credit for a response, it must contain substantive comments regarding the question posed.
Blackboard is a course management system recently adopted by Old Dominion
University. This class will access its discussion forum in order to
carry out asynchronous interactions. In such an environment users post
messages in public areas that allow others to post responses. Students
will be instructed to post a response to Blackboard at various times
during the semester.
