With your client software downloaded and your Web site ready, it's time to log into the Host computer. In order to to this you must be connected to the Internet.

I will give instructions for both Windows and Macintosh.

Windows using WS_FTP LE

Launch Software

WS_FTP will begin with a window that looks like this the first time you run it. It is set up to connect to the company's ftp server.

We want to create a new profile.

  • Click New

A new blank profile will appear. Fill in the information as you see it in this graphic.

  • The Profile Name will help you find this profile in a list.
  • Leave Host Type as it is
  • Fill in the Host Name/Address
  • Fill in User ID
  • Leave Password blank
  • Click on the Startup tab

I leave passwords blank on all machines, even my own. You don't want any accidents such as a three year old getting into your Web directory.

In Startup enter the information as you see it (except you replace "hollenbeck" with your own last name in lowercase):

  • Initial Remote Site Folder:
  • Initial Local Folder

The Initial Local Folder is the location of your 575_website on you local hard drive. Chances are you have put it in the location you see here.

Enter the password (supplied in BlackBoard) and press OK.

And here you are. If everything was entered correctly, you should see your local 575_website on the left, and your empty remote folder on the right.

If you do not see your local folder on the left, you can maneuver through your hard drive in the same manner as an "open" dialog box. Eventually, this is what you should see.

Having connected, we're ready to publish our site.
