To Search or Not to Search
Donít use a search engine if:
- If there isnít enough content
- As a Band-Aid for poor navigation systems
Use one if:
- If your site grows chaotically
- If your site is large enough that it will take a substantial amount
of time to find things even if the navigation system is good
- If our content is dynamic
How Searchers Search
- Known item searching
- Existence searching
- Whether ëxí exists or not
- Exploratory searching
- I donít know about ëxí, butÖ
- Comprehensive searching
- I want everything about ëxí
Designing a Search Interface

- Support Different Modes of Searching
- Integrate Browsing and Searching
- Make Search Options Clear
Indexing
