To Search or Not to Search

Donít use a search engine if:

  • If there isnít enough content
  • As a Band-Aid for poor navigation systems

Use one if:

  • If your site grows chaotically
  • If your site is large enough that it will take a substantial amount of time to find things even if the navigation system is good
  • If our content is dynamic

How Searchers Search

  • Known item searching
    • Where is ëxí
  • Existence searching
    • Whether ëxí exists or not
  • Exploratory searching
    • I donít know about ëxí, butÖ
  • Comprehensive searching
    • I want everything about ëxí

Designing a Search Interface

Ideally:

  • Support Different Modes of Searching
  • Integrate Browsing and Searching
  • Make Search Options Clear

Indexing

  • Use the META tag
  • Index the site if its possible
