Macintosh
- BBEdit 7.0
- BBEdit is the standard powerhouse HTML editor on the Mac. It's grown
in size and expense, but remains the tool of choice for page development.
The search and replaced capabilities of BBEdit are especially powerful
and useful. TextWrangler is
less powerful, but will get you started and is only $49.00. But I'd
save up for BBEdit
- Alpha
- My favorite web tool from old, but it went through a period where
it wasn't supported. It always was quirky and a little buggy, but it
was the only editor that gives each tag a keyboard shortcut. Once learned,
web page creation was very fast. There was also excellent support for
CSS and JavaScript. A new version is now available, and a public beta
is posted for OS X.
Windows
- Macromedia
HomeSite
- The most used Windows editor, and is generally a part of the Window's
web developer's kit. Many powerful features.
- HTML-Kit
- Some say this is just as good as HomeSite, and the price is right.
It's free! Built in HTML-Tidy, which is the best HTML code validator
I know.
Graphical
- Netscape
Communicator
- Included in Netscape Communicator is Composer, an OK graphical HTML
editor. It's main draw is that it's free; we use it in the Mac labs
at ODU for that reason. But for quick and dirty beginning level work,
it's OK.
- Macromedia
Dreamweaver MX 2004
- The most used graphical editor/site manager by Web developers on both
platforms. Not cheap, but educators can get deep discounts at places
like Creation Engine. Also,
a fully functional 30 day trial version is available from Macromedia.
Be sure to buy the Web Studio - it's not that much more money and you
get 4 important software packages with it.
